Our team are back from the 10th World Congress of Herpetology (WCH10), a meeting of the world’s top Herpetologists (reptile and amphibian specialists) that occurs every 3-4years.
We have upskilled our knowledge on all things snakes and on dog scenting abilities, listening to fantastic speakers from across the globe in Kuching, Borneo, Malaysia.
Luckily several members of the Animal Ark staff were able to attend the WCH10 conference and when not listening to the latest herpetological research they were hiking through national parks in Borneo seeking wildlife at every turn.
In Borneo recently, we spotted a Borneo splash frog Staurois guttatus.
Communication is key when you’re a frog. Usually, it’s the male frogs that vocalise to attract a mate. Every species making a different sound. But sometimes just ‘croaking’ isn’t enough to get you noticed, especially if you live in a noisy habitat such as next to fast flowing streams or waterfalls.
So how does a frog in such a situation attract the attention of lady frogs, well sometimes by signalling. Foot flagging as it’s known is a great visual way of getting spotted, by lifting your rear leg extending it out and away from the body exposing your fabulous, webbed feet and waving. Sometimes the signalling involves a front foot being waved but it seems foot flagging is the way to go – also the depth of colours on your rear legs also indicates your maturity and strength. Females of the species are also willing to flag or wave in return.
Although we are in the midst of wet weather, the heat is on the way!
Spring is now around the corner, our South-West dates from next week for Snake Avoidance Training are just in time for the snakey season. Before you know it they will begin to emerge to soak up the sun!
