WELCOME

We wish our subscribers, dogs, children and all the warmest greetings for the holiday season!

And so belatedly summer is here, with a Christmas blast. We have had very warm snakey days and at our Perth hills property, we see that many reptiles are on the move. Although our section of the Mahogany Creek has only just (late December) stopped flowing, it was absolutely bone dry last year in October!

It is an exciting time of year for snakes, and an anxious one for many dog owners.

Reptiles, like snakes, move about as summer arrives; some travel to feeding areas away from refuge sites, they may return daily to seek shelter or may move about for a season before retiring to their favourite overwintering spot.

Much is yet to be learnt about the day to day lives of many reptiles including snakes. Surprisingly studies we heard about at the recent World Herpetological Conference in Borneo show that many snakes are more social than had been thought, and some may even creche babies and have ‘mothering’ instincts.

So please try to live with them, less shovels and shotguns. With a bit of training and empathy they are easy to safely relocate.

Remember also snakes rarely, if ever, attack dogs. They just don’t liked being attacked themselves, nosed or picked up as toys.

However, they are definitely very active now, so do think about refresher training for your dog if you haven’t already booked in.

We are hyper busy at this time of year and try to visit as many towns and rural areas as we can. We sometimes struggle with the weather and staff availability. We have two new mums and a dad off on parental leave – Georgia (admin) delivered a healthy baby boy just before Christmas, and Shannon also had her baby boy back in October. So be patient if trying to reach us by phone and do try the online system as much as possible.
