Combined Fauna & Venomous Snake Handling Training Course

Cool and wet in Perth but lovely and warm up north in the Kimberley.
Great privilege to travel up and explore the country of Ngarinyin peoples. David (the boss) and trainers Kurt, Jake and Jamie recently travelled as guests of the Wilinggin Aboriginal Corporation.
Steven Martin Coordinator and the Wunggurr Rangers, Kane, Jason, Dean, Malcolm & Logan were most welcoming and without doubt we all felt the visit was a huge success. We had met some of the rangers previously in Perth whilst conducting Fauna and Snake Handling training.
During the day we undertook trips around the Gibb River Road area giving us an understanding of the role these rangers play in caring for country from prescribed burns to assisting road travellers, maintaining fencing and much more.
During our educational evening spotlighting sessions, we were able to discuss and identify several interesting species from scorpions to cane toads. The latter having a huge and negative effect throughout WA as their range is expanding south through the Kimbereley region. Creatures such as quolls or goannas die when attempting to eat the toxic toads. Our native animals have not evolved coping mechanisms and only a few species have learnt how to catch, kill or avoid these toxic amphibians.
The rangers have also been involved in and desire to continue a turtle monitoring project. They study, mark and measure the Northern Red faced turtle Emydura australis. Skillfully caught by the ranger, diving into the beautiful and often clear waters in the gorges and river systems of the area. There is also a desire to continue this and expand the monitoring of other native species both fauna and flora. To further scientific knowledge of many poorly known creatures and importantly also to give knowledge back to themselves and their community.
Wilinggin native title area covers over 6 million hectares of land giving Ngarinyin people legal rights to access, look after and care for their country. A huge undertaking over a vast landscape.
So, my way of thinking, pause for drum roll, if we can find more funding, we (Animal Ark) can assist with delivering some of the fauna monitoring and recording. The Wunggurr Rangers believe we would be a good provider, coordinating and leading the research alongside the rangers and other traditional owners.
Anyway here are some images from the trip.

Our most recent enterprise is focused on keeping dogs away from the invariably lethal 1080 baits.
These are deployed around WA and will lead to a painful death once consumed. There is no treatment available to counter the toxicity of 1080.
